What Comes After Salvation? Helping New Believers Take Their First Steps

So someone just put their trust in Jesus—what now?

This powerful moment, when a person prays to receive Christ, is not the finish line. It’s the starting line. In Session 12 of 13 in the GOODNEWS Gospel Conversation Training, we talk about how to help someone take that all-important next step after saying “yes” to Jesus. This moment is the “S” in GOOD NEWSShow them what’s next.

In this session, we walk you through how to lead a person from simply calling on the name of the Lord (Romans 10:13) to becoming a true disciple of Jesus. Here’s how:

1. Lead Them in Prayer

This doesn’t need to be complicated or perfect. You’re leading them with magic words—you’re simply guiding a new believer in a conversation with God. Help them:

  • Acknowledge they’ve sinned.

  • Trust Jesus as their Savior.

Pro Tip: Break it up into small, repeatable phrases. It helps them focus on who they’re talking to, rather than trying to remember a long sentence.

2. Celebrate the Moment!

They may not fully understand what just happened, but you do. Their eternity just changed! Be excited. Take a photo, post it (with permission), encourage them to tell someone. It makes their decision more real—and more public.

3. Make It About Discipleship

Salvation isn’t just about a decision. It’s about a journey. Help them take next steps:

  • Get them a Bible. (John is a good book to start with)

  • Teach them how to pray.

  • Connect them to a church.

  • Help them to get baptized.

  • Help them understand the security of their salvation.

And here’s one you might not expect: Encourage them to start sharing their faith. Some of the boldest evangelists are brand-new believers.

4. Keep It Going

We’re not called to make converts. We’re called to make disciples (see 2 Peter 3:18). That’s why our training doesn’t stop here. There’s one more session in our 13-part video series, and each one builds your gospel strategy—your ability to share Jesus clearly, confidently, and compassionately.

Whether you’re just beginning to share your faith or looking to sharpen your skills, the GOODNEWS Gospel Conversation Training is for you. Let’s become excellent at what matters most—sharing the gospel and making disciples.
