One of the most overlooked tools in evangelism is something so simple, yet incredibly powerful: listening.
In Session 7 of our 13-part training series called GOODNEWS, we focus on a practical and respectful strategy to bridge the gap between casual conversation and a gospel conversation. We call it: Inquire & Admire.
Most of us are eager to share our faith, but sometimes we come in hot—leading with arguments, facts, or clever comebacks. But here’s the truth: you’ll never argue someone into the Kingdom. Real transformation starts with connection, not confrontation.
When we inquire about someone’s beliefs, we’re doing more than making small talk—we’re asking meaningful questions that draw out their worldview. Questions like:
-
“Where do you think everything came from?”
-
“Do you believe there’s life after death?”
-
“Who do you think Jesus is?”
These questions aren’t traps. They’re open doors.
But don’t stop there. Once someone opens up, do something unexpected: admire all that you can about what they believe. That’s right—admire it.
If they’re an atheist, admire their passion for science and reason.
If they’re Mormon, affirm their strong commitment to family.
If they’re religious, thank them for their dedication to spiritual practices.
Even if you disagree, you’re building a bridge, not a wall.
Proverbs 15:1 reminds us, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” When you admire, you disarm. You earn trust. And you pave the way to share your hope in Christ without unnecessary resistance.
In decades of evangelism, I’ve never had someone say, “How dare you ask if you can share what you believe?”—not after I’ve genuinely listened and admired them. That’s gospel strategy in action: not just knowing the message, but delivering it with grace.
If you’re ready to master evangelism in a way that’s confident, respectful, and deeply effective, this session is just one piece of the journey.
