How to Start a Gospel Conversation Without Feeling Awkward

Let’s be honest—starting a gospel conversation can feel intimidating. You might worry that you’ll say the wrong thing, come off as pushy, or freeze up altogether. But what if sharing your faith didn’t require being someone you’re not?

In Session 6 of our GOODNEWS video training series, we get real about what it means to have a gospel conversation. And it starts with something simple: just have a conversation.

One of the most important things we can remember is this—people are not projects. They’re people. And that means we don’t have to switch into a robotic “evangelism mode.” We can simply be ourselves. That was the encouragement I gave a bus full of students once, who were terrified of sharing their faith in downtown Denver. I told them, “You don’t have to share the gospel with anyone—but you do have to talk to people.” That changed everything for them. And it can for you too.

Whether you’re naturally outgoing or more introverted like me, there are practical ways to grow in confidence when talking to others. One tool I use often is the acronym LIFE:

  • L – Location: Ask where they’re from or where they’ve lived.

  • I – Interests: What do they like to do for fun?

  • F – Family: Do they have kids, siblings, a spouse?

  • E – Education: Where did they go to school or where are they now?

These topics help ease into natural, relaxed conversation. From there, the goal is to make a gentle pivot into spiritual things. For example, while sipping coffee, I once told a barista to surprise me with a drink. As I tasted it, I struck up a conversation with someone about the amazing way our taste buds work. Then I asked, “Do you think God designed us to experience so many flavor varieties—or is it just coincidence?” A simple moment became a meaningful exchange.

That’s how gospel conversations begin—not with a sermon, but with curiosity and care.

The Bible backs this up. Proverbs 20:5 says, “The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.” The more we listen, ask, and care, the more the door for truth.

Want to grow in this? Session 6 is just one of 13 training videos designed to help believers become excellent at evangelism. From starting conversations to clearly presenting the gospel, we walk with you every step of the way.
