If you’ve just had the joy of leading someone to Christ—celebrate it! That’s a huge moment. But it’s also not the finish line. It’s the starting point.
Too often, evangelism is treated like a single event: share the gospel, get a response, and move on. But Jesus didn’t say, “Go make converts.” He said, “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). That means more than a decision—it means a life transformed to look like Jesus.
In this final session of our 13-part evangelism training series, we talk about what comes next: discipleship.
The Four Chair Picture of Spiritual Growth
Jesus’ model of discipleship wasn’t just about information—it was about imitation. In His day, a disciple copied everything about his rabbi: his theology, his character, and even his cause.
That’s what Jesus had in mind when He said, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). Following Him isn’t passive. It’s a journey through stages of spiritual maturity, which we illustrate with four chairs:
-
The Lost Chair – This is where everyone starts: broken, spiritually disconnected, and in need of salvation.
-
The Believer Chair – A person has trusted Jesus, but hasn’t yet grown in obedience—maybe they’ve never been baptized or aren’t reading their Bible.
-
The Disciple Chair – This person is working to know Christ deeply. They’re plugged into Scripture, church, and prayer. They’re serious about their faith.
-
The Disciple-Maker Chair – Here’s where multiplication begins. This person isn’t just growing—they’re helping others grow. They’re making disciples who make disciples.

From Addition to Multiplication
Think about how fast a virus like COVID-19 spread. That wasn’t through addition—it was through multiplication. Jesus designed the gospel to spread the same way: one disciple helping another become a disciple, and so on.
That’s your call. Don’t stop at sharing the gospel—start investing in the people you’ve led to Christ. Help them grow. Help them become disciple-makers.
