From Belief to Boldness: How to Clearly Describe the Gospel

Have you ever found yourself in a spiritual conversation and wondered, “How do I even begin to explain what I believe?” You’re not alone—and that’s exactly why we created the GOODNEWS training series.

This article is based on Session 8 of 13 in our video training series designed to help believers become excellent at evangelism. If you haven’t yet, check out the full series here:

Describing What You Believe Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

After you’ve opened the conversation and respectfully listened to someone else’s beliefs, it’s your turn to share. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to explain everything about God. Just the essential truths that help the gospel make sense.

Think of it like this—do you need to understand electricity to flip on a light switch? Of course not. And people don’t need to understand everything about theology to begin trusting Jesus. What they need is clarity, not complexity.

Use Four Simple Anchors:

God. Problem. Hope. Decision.

God – Talk about who God is. The Creator. Holy. Loving. His holiness is key—it’s what reveals the depth of our separation from Him.
Problem – Sin. Even the most moral fall short (Romans 3:23)—like a record jumper trying to cross the Grand Canyon. Covering it up? Like frosting a burnt cake.
Hope – Jesus. He lived the life we couldn’t and paid the penalty we owed. The resurrection is the ultimate proof that everything He said is true and that we have that same hope.
Decision – Trust. Not just believing with your mind, but relying with your life—like getting in the wheelbarrow on the tightrope. That’s real faith.

Paint Pictures That Stick

Use stories, illustrations, and scripture. Jesus did this with parables, and it still works today. From burnt cakes to parachutes, the point is to help people see what you believe. When words get fuzzy, anchor your message in something simple and visual.

And when your mind goes blank? Go with what you do know. Quote John 3:16 or Romans 5:8. Keep it real. Keep it grounded.

Start Here. Keep Going.

Evangelism doesn’t require a seminary degree—it takes heart, practice, and a willingness to get better. That’s why we created the GOODNEWS series. You can grow, session by session, into someone who confidently shares their faith with clarity and compassion.
