Have you ever told someone your story of faith and then wondered, How do I transition into asking about their own spiritual journey? In evangelism, your personal testimony is powerful. It’s not just a story—it’s a bridge. And what you say next could be the invitation someone needs to begin their own journey with Jesus.
This is exactly what we unpack in Session 10 of 13 in our GOODNEWS Evangelism Training Series.
After sharing your testimony, try asking this simple but powerful question:
“Has anything like that ever happened to you?”
You’re not asking if they go to church or if they’re religious. You’re asking if they have ever had a moment where they truly put their trust in Jesus. This gets to the heart of the gospel. John 3:3 says, “Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Being born again is not a vague feeling or lifelong process—it’s an event. Just like you were once not born and then were, there is a clear “before and after” in a believer’s life.
After I ask ” if anything like that has happened to them” I always follow it with “Or are you still trying to figure this out?” That little added phrase creates a safe, judgment-free space. You’re not pressuring—they’re being invited to consider Jesus in a personal and relational way.
But what if they say, “Yeah, I’ve got a story kind of like that”? Great. Now, just listen. And as you do, listen for “Jesus”. Acts 4:12 reminds us, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.”
If their story doesn’t include Jesus, gently speak truth. Here’s a helpful analogy: Say… “If we’re about to go skydiving and notice your parachute looks loose… would you want me to say something?” Of course! Eternity is far more important than a freefall out of a plane.
When someone claims to be a Christian but leaves out Jesus, it’s worth gently asking:
“Did you know the Bible says salvation is only through Jesus?”
We’re not trying to win an argument—we’re trying to help someone find life.
This session is all about learning how to examine their story the way Jesus would—truthfully and lovingly—and how to clearly invite them to put their trust in Him.
