Have you ever felt nervous or unsure when it comes to sharing your faith? You’re not alone—and that’s actually the best place to start. In fact, if you want to be effective in evangelism, the first step isn’t knowing the right words—it’s going to God in prayer.
In Session Five of the GOODNEWS training series, we tackle what’s arguably the most important part of evangelism: prayer. Before you open your mouth, open your heart before God. Prayer isn’t just preparation—it is the mission’s power source.
Prayer Is Our Air Support
Think of evangelism like a spiritual battle. In the 1991 Operation Desert Storm, U.S. ground troops saw quick success on the battlefield because of 40 days of intense air support that dismantled enemy strongholds before soldiers even set foot on the ground. That’s what prayer does in evangelism. It softens hearts, prepares minds, and clears the way for the message of Jesus to be heard.
When you pray, you’re calling in divine air support!
Let Your Fear Lead You to Your Knees
Even the most seasoned evangelists get nervous. That fear isn’t something to avoid—it’s something to use. Let it push you to your knees. Say, “Lord, I need You in this.” Salvation isn’t your job—it’s the work of the Spirit. But your prayers? They are powerful and effective (James 5:16).
There’s a quote from this training session that sums it up perfectly:
“Without God, there is no God”.
“If God doesn’t do it, then God didn’t do it.”
In other words, no matter how smooth your gospel presentation may be, if God’s not in it, it’s not going anywhere. So go to Him first.
How to Pray Evangelistically
Start by praying for two simple things:
-
That God would work in the lives of people around you.
-
That He would open your eyes to see the opportunities already there.
It’s like when you buy a new car and suddenly see that same model everywhere. Those gospel moments were always there—you just weren’t looking. But prayer gives you eyes to see.
Write down a few names. Maybe it’s a neighbor, coworker, or classmate. Keep them on your mirror, in your Bible, or set a daily phone reminder. Pray with laser-like focus and expect God to move.
